However, some speculate that it comes from the Latin word POPULUS which means POPLAR (as there was a small garden adorned with poplars around Nero's tomb). However from the 1400s others its believed that Roman people gathered for protests, demonstrations, or executions. What makes this square so unique is the quantity of priceless artifacts found inside the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, inside this church there are very important paintings by Michelangelo Merisi known as Caravaggio, Bernardino di Betto Betti known as Pinturicchio, and a fresco by the Carracci brothers which you can access for free.
