Pantheon

During the Roman Empire religious freedom was permitted and Roman Citizens could worship their various deities at the Pantheon which was considered to be both liberal and progressive at the time. The Pantheon has a semi-dome on top, with a hole inside. The hole was used to channel the sun's rays, which illuminated the various altars based on the time of day. The floor of the Pantheon was used to calculate the lunar cycles based on where the light rested. It is also interesting that the hole on the top of the dome was studied to such an extent that the Romans understood that even on rainy days, if they kept the structure inside warm enough with torches and fires lit, the steam would prevented water from entering inside!
